DR. C’s Tip #3: It's Up To Authors To Promote Their Books

You've written and published your first book, now what?

It's now time to promote it! However, when it comes to marketing, authors sometimes find it hard to do on their own. So, it's not uncommon for authors to hire marketing companies to promote their books.

However, it does not matter which marketing company you work with to advertise your book because you – the author –  definitely need to “push” your book, too.

You, as the author, need to let people know when your book will make its debut. And once published, you and the marketing agency need to discuss a strategy to promote the work and develop steps to carry out the promotion.

There are several avenues to promote your work:

• Your own blog and/or website as well as those of your marketing agency

• Social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest

• Constant Contact, an online email marketing company

• Speaking engagements

• Book signings

• Brochures to pass out at speaking engagements, book signings, to friends

Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind that you and your marketing company should work together so that the promotion of your book clearly shows a coordinated effort.
