MANA has a new Continuous Short Story on its blog for 2015 that's ready for you to add your comments.

Our 2014 short story project met with success, with over 900 views and over 200 comments. A big "Thank You" goes out to everyone who participated. As a result,  MANA donated funds  to its charity of 2014: The Women Veterans Project sponsored by Swords to Plowshares, a community-based, not-for profit veteran service organization.

This year, we asked you to choose MANA's charity of the year, and we are pleased that the
Alzheimer's Foundation of America was submitted and selected. The Alzheimer's Foundation of America provides care and services to individuals confronting dementia and to their caregivers and families.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America consists of more than 1,900 member organizations that meet the educational, social, emotional and practical needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, their caregivers and families. To find out more about the organization, click HERE

This is how the Continuous Short Story on our blog works:

  1. Jabin perched on the top of a column, folding his wings about himself. Down below, he could see Dustin sitting on the steps of the nearby, run-down building, looking glum as usual. Jabin kept a close eye on the human, just in case he started wandering around, as he was prone to do. As an official guardian angel, Jabin couldn't complain about his job, but how was he supposed to protect someone who always went looking for trouble?

    1. Jabin also thought about why he was given this job. Why was he chosen to be Dustin's guardian angel? What was the purpose? He began to wonder why as Dustin stood up. Dustin looked toward Jabin's way, He could see Jabin! How could he see me I'm an angel?! Dustin ran away in shock.

    2. Then Jabin realized, it doesnt matter why he was given the job or why he was chosen to be Dustin's guardian angel. He realized that the only thing that truly matters is that he is Dustin's guardian angel and he has a job to do. Obviously, the thoughts of why and how will always be in his mind. Now the work begins. Finding Dustin again and starting the guardian process is Jabin's top priority. Jabin will learn that watching over Dustin is not just a job but an honor and privliage. It will bring good karma all around.

  2. Dustin looked around, taking in the depressing scene around him. This was a world long gone; forgotten by the rest of society. Crumbled pillars lie in ruin, what once were flowers now wither into dust, and the harsh winds knock bricks loose from the decaying buildings. Dustin was waiting. For who? He didn't know. He looked down at his watch before whispering to himself, "he's late."

    1. Things weren't going well for Dustin, yet again his life had become a train wreck. Things at work were a disaster, but they paled in comparison to the tsunami that had hit his marriage. He wondered where it all went wrong. He thought back to the day they stood at the altar and exchanged their vows. Why had his wife changed? What had he done to drive her away? As the wind whipped past him, he decided it was time to leave the steps. Evidently, the fool he was waiting for was not coming.

  3. He decided it was time to leave and reached for his bag. Right before he was about to give up, he heard faint footsteps in the distance. Dustin could see the dark outline of Michael's small, emaciated body approaching him. He didn't have time for Michael's lack of punctuality. He looked back down at his watch then looked back up at Michael with a piercing gaze, jabbing at him, "you're late."

  4. "I'm sorry, I got caught up at...work" came the reply. He fixed his glasses and stared at Dustin, waiting for a response. Dustin just stared, examining the man in front of him. He wasn't what he expected. He had short dark hair, a sickly face, and a pair of broken glasses. He looked like a junkie, like one of those guys on the corner strung out on Meth. "Fine, let's just get down to business."

  5. "Why the hurry?" Michael asked, using the same wheedling tone Dustin heard car dealers use when attempting to strike a bargain.
"I have things to do," he muttered, fishing his wallet out of his pocket. "Did you get me what I asked?"
Michael grinned, his yellowed teeth sticking jaggedly out in all directions. "Never failed before." He put his hand in his pocket, but didn't take it out; Dustin knew he wanted cash first.
From the pillar above, Jabin watched closely, poised to spring down to the scene; he could tell the time for action was swiftly approaching.

    1. Suddenly, Michael's head blown off. Jabin and Dustin quickly flew behind pillars. The shots continued. Twenty men continued firing, driving them back. They took what Michael had in his pockets. They needed to act fast.

  6. Dustin tensed, his every movement became forced. He needed the contents of that cargo-container but he'd never be able to find it without the shipping manifest tucked inside Michael's pocket. "Damn," Dustin thought. "I've got to stretch this out."
"What's the holdup kid? I thought you were itchin' to conclude our little deal." He left Michael's question hanging in the air, as he noticed something glinting from atop the pillar above them. Jabin deftly slid a dagger from beneath his cloak, a well practiced motion. The time to strike was nigh; his leg muscles bunched in preparation to pounce. Just then, an explosion of lights and sirens cut through the tension like a razor.

  7. "Police! Freeze!" In a second, the little corner was surrounded by cop cars. Dustin jumped; he had been so careful to remain unseen, but somehow or other, someone must have seen him anyway. He turned, hoping to catch Michael, but the other man had already disappeared.
"Hey, you!" About four of the uniformed officers were bearing down on him. Without thinking, Dustin vaulted over the garbage cans behind him and rushed into the alley that opened onto the main road. Glancing back, he saw the police stumbling with the trash cans. Once he reached the corner, he could get out of sight and---
    SCREEEEECH!
Evidently, the light was green. Dustin looked up just in time to see the truck bearing down on him before he squeezed his eyes tight shut, preparing for death.
Instead of hard, greasy metal, something huge and fluffy wrapped itself around him, barreling him to the ground, out of harm's way.

  8. Dustin struggled to recall the previous night as he laid up in bed. His only memories were that of a pair of bright beaming lights quickly approaching him and a voice all too similar, one so close to his daughters, that faintly called for him.
Jabin coordinated the entire event in an attempt to steer Dustin from his destructive behavior, but it seemed as if nothing was working. Not even Dustin's own daughter could save him from his self-imposed demise.
As he got up out of bed, Dustin's mind fluttered with the planning of his daily activities. One's that seemed to always involve danger. He lit a smoke as he dialed his cell phone...

  9. The phone rang for twenty seconds, then, as predicted, went to voicemail. Dustin sighed. "Hey, Lauren, it's me again. I know you don't want to talk, and I totally understand. It's just..." He paused a moment, measuring his words. "I'm at a really hard time right now; I just... I don't know. I'm trying, really I am, and I wish you believe me. Miss you guys; tell Cathy I said hi." He started to hang up, then changed his mind. "Tell her... I had this crazy dream about her last night; she might get a kick out of that." Then he hung up.
"Speaking of," said a new voice from his bed, "I'll bet you'll get a kick out of this."
Dustin whirled, and Jabin had to smother a grin at the shock on his face. He'd only slipped into a more casual form; an older man in his forties, with graying hair, a loose shirt, and rather untidy jeans. If Dustin had seen his angelic form, it would be a different story.

  10. "Chiiirist! Who the hell are you!?" Dustin howled.
"Teehee," a jovial chuckle was his reply. "I must apologize for meeting you in so informal a manner. But circumstances necessitate hasty action."
"What circumstances? What are you talking about!?" Dustin's voice was still filled with panic as he dived for the bedside table and ripped open the drawer.
"I'm afraid I had to remove your weapon from the drawer while you were momentarily distracted. Once again, circumstances require that I reveal myself to you now, and this would only complicate our introduction." Jabin held up the silver revolver for Dustin to see.
His eyes wide with alarm, Dustin repeated his question, "who are you?"
"Suffice it to say that I have come to aid you, insofar as I am able. I have been observing you for some time." Jabin's matter of fact tone belied the intensity of the situation.
"I've heard enough!" Dustin leaped from the bed and sent his heel flying directly at Jabin's head with a powerful roundhouse.
Jabin sighed, "this is precisely what I wanted to avoid." His forearm darted up to absorb the kick. The impact of which was like bone hitting concrete. Dustin reeled back in pain and feel to the floor in a heap.
"Damnit!" He cried, "what are you made of?"
"Most of what you are made of I should think... We haven't time for such frivolities. As I've said, I am here to aid you, and miss Hargrove is in great danger."
"Lauren?" Suddenly Dustin forgot all about the pain in his leg.

  11. "There's not much time to explain," said Jabin quickly. "At present, the most you need to know is that your wife needs your help."
Dustin snorted. "Not my wife for much longer, if she has her way."
"Don't say such things," Jabin pleaded, his heart wrenching at the thought. "Right now, she is still your wife, and she still needs you just as much."
Dustin blinked, a sense of stoicism setting in. Here was this stranger, probably an escaped convict or a lunatic, running around in his house, with his gun, and telling him Lauren was in trouble. "Okay, hold on one second. I don't know how you found my last name, and I don't care. All I want to say is this: stay away from me, stay away from my family, or I'm contacting authorities."
To his surprise, Jabin gave a chuckle. "Oh, the authorities already know, I can assure you. I work on a level a bit higher than just the police."
Dustin scowled. "What, are you with the CIA or something?"
Jabin shook his head, smiling a little. "You really don't know much about angels, do you?"
    What?

    1. Now he knew this guy must really be a lunatic. He needed to get rid of this guy and make sure Lauren was Okay. For some reason however, he felt something incredibly serene coming from this man in the midst of the urgency. He also felt compelled to trust him and somehow felt everything could be resolved, but he didn't know why. Could this man really be an angel?

  13. Dustin look at Jabin for a long time. He didn't say anything just got in the car and processed to drive. On the way home he saw his best friend Billy and told him about his wife. Billy jump in the car. Billy told him to stop at the store, when billy came out the store he had a shotgun and the local newpaper. Dustin was a little scare but he didnt show it. they drove to the house, but when they got there it was a little to late

  14. No one was home. The house was locked, the car gone, and not even the motion-sensor on the porch light came on at Dustin's approach.
"Is that all?" said Billy from the car, giving him a skeptical look.
"I don't understand it," muttered Dustin, walking to the garage door and testing it. It, too, was locked. "Look, there was this guy," he said, turning back to Billy. "He said Lauren was in trouble; I swear I'm not making this up. He was built like a superhero, and he said he was--" He stopped himself, almost blurting out "He said he was an angel." Heaven knew what Billy would think if he started ranting like a nutcase.
"Sounds to me like your basic break-in-whacko," said Billy, putting the car in park and stepping out. "He could'a found your names online, or in the phonebook, or talked to someone you know, or anything."
At that moment, Lauren's car pulled into the drive. Dustin noted the groceries piled in the back, as well as the surprise on her face. "What are you doing here?" she asked when she got out.
"I... um, hey." Dustin reached over her shoulder to take a bag of groceries. "Someone told me... you needed help. Must've been a mistake. So, how are you?"
"Fine," said Lauren, with just a hint of frostiness. "Cathy's not here; she had a soccer game."
"Oh." Dustin scrambled for something more to say, trying to explain himself. "Uh, I just... I miss you guys."
Lauren didn't change expressions. "Dustin, I'm seeing someone else."

    1. "What do you mean you're seeing someone else?' Dustin at that moment felt this great emptiness, he had such hopes that Laureen would not be so hastily to get involve with anyone. Yes he had come to turns that he had made several mistakes but being a family to him meant that we would work through the differences. As she stood there waiting on Dustin to respond to the news of her seeing someone.....no one said nothing. Dustin looks up slowly wanting to just throw himself in her arms, wanting her to give him another chance, lost for words....a moment of silence...wanting to speak...but no words would come out.....

  15. "That's great," he finally said weakly, barely managing a smile. "Who?"
"No one you know," said Lauren, picking up another grocery bag. "Care to tell me why you stopped by?"
"Um..." Dustin glanced at Billy, who was still standing by his car. "Well, Bill and I just---"
Billy put up his hands. "Do not drag me into this. I was just here for the ride."
Lauren raised her eyebrows. "Well, I'm here now; so what do you want?"
"I just---" Dustin glanced hastily around. To his right, he suddenly caught sight of a man standing on the corner, beckoning to him. It was Jabin!
    "What?" inquired Lauren, frowning.
"Sorry, I gotta go." Dustin stepped around her and hurried across the street.

  16. Lauren couldn't help but wonder what was Dustin so hesitate to say? As she began to put away her groceries she suddenly recalled the fun times that she and Dustin once shared together and at that moment she had to admit that she "yes I miss having him around." Suddenly she ended her thoughts at the sound of voices raised , as if someone was in an heated argument. She stopped to glance out the window to see Dustin and a man she didn't know what appeared to be a great disagreement.

    1. Who is this man that Dustin was having such a heated discussion with and what is it all about? It must be an important topic because both men have strong feelings, the looks and their body language said that much to anyone that saw them. "I'm going to ask you one more time, what do you want with me? Why do you keep showing up? And why do you think that I want or even need you around me, much less in my life?" Jabin just looked at Dustin, wanting to make sure that he had said everything that he wanted to get out.

  17. "What does that even mean!?" cried Dustin agitatedly. "First of all, I still have no clue who you even are, and I still believe you when you tell me my wife's in trouble. Now you're saying, 'It's not that kind of trouble'!?! Who ARE you?"
"Calm down," said Jabin, with all the practiced tone of instructing a seven-year-old. "I only meant that you cannot do this by yourself."
Dustin waved to Billy's car. "I have Billy; I'm not alone."
Jabin gave a pained smile. "Ah, that's not quite what I meant."
    "Then what did you mean?"
"I mean, you can't do this without MY help," said Jabin. "Because your enemy isn't... normal."
Dustin ground his teeth, trying very hard to think of light, fluffy things. "What do you mean by normal?"
Jabin paused, carefully measuring his words. "Um, it's kind of a... sort of a thing like me."

  18. "yes,;;;Dustin that's exactly what I'm trying to say!'' "Oh my God..I thought...I mean...how can you be sure that it's like me?' "How long have you known this? ...I need to know...' Dustin asked without giving Jabin an opportunity to answer. Dustin now in shock, as he stood there wondering what to do...he thought...All this believing that all the other abnormal people were long since just disappeared...or even went away to some other planet....he found it hard to believe that the secret he has kept or thought he kept hidden is now out in the open

  19. Jesus, Jabin. The further he walked, the more he remembered what got him there: three weeks of anxiety attacks right out of the blue. The first night he still remembered with fear. Around 11 pm he woke up so convinced his son was injured or dead, he leaped from the bed, over his wife, yelling to her, and ran up the stairs, his heart beating out of his chest, to find the boy safely asleep. It didn't matter. His heart just kept beating faster and faster. Something is horribly wrong! His mind and his breathing going so fast he began to feel tortured. That's why the painting, "The Scream" so upsets him he can't bear to look at it....

    ReplyDelete
  20. But he's past that. Dustin managed to control his mental illness after years of therapy. He looked up at Jabin with a long face. "I can't help her. She doesn't love me anymore. I don't know if you were listening, but she's found someone else. It's inevitable. I manage to push everyone away." As soon as he finished talking, Billy's faint voice bellowed from across the street. "Dustin! I gotta get back to my house before 7. The Simpsons are about to come on. And I have to make my mom some dinner!" Dustin looked on as Lauren mumbled something to Billy and walked in her house. She hated Billy. She always talked about Billy being a parasite that only mooched off of Dustin and even his own mother. She was right. Dustin knew it. But Billy's playful, innocent, immature personality is what made him such a character to be around. Dustin looked back to Jabin. "It's time you grow up Dustin. You have to take responsibility for yourself and the people that are truly important to you."

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dustin blinked; for some obscure reason, his head had gone fuzzy. Looking down, he saw that Jabin was holding his hand. "Uh, I'm sorry, but I literally have no idea what just happened."
Jabin let go. "Well, the simplest way to say it is that I just read you."
Dustin blinked again. "Read me? Like, mind reading, or something?"
"Sort of. See, since I'm specifically your guardian, I know most of your past. But what I did just now, I 'experienced' it; I saw it from your perspective."
Dustin blinked a third time. "What?"
From the car, Billy, now in the driver's seat, honked the horn. "Hey, you coming or what?"
Dustin waved him on. "Oh, you go ahead; I'll walk."
Surprised, Billy shrugged, then pulled out and away.
Jabin looked Dustin in the eye. "Look, here's the deal. We have a strong connection, you and I. In order for me to help you with this, we have to understand more of each other. This enemy is strong and dangerous; one wrong step, and it's all toast. I'll help you figure this out, don't worry." He gave Dustin a reassuring smile.
Dustin took a step back. "Okay, look, I understand you're a good guy. Really, I do; you're just trying to help. Well, do you really want to help? Then just give me some space; talk to someone else about this. Like, maybe a therapist or something." He turned and began the ten-block trek to the bus stop.
Jabin followed, keeping pace with him. "You think I'm some crazy nut off the street, right?"
"Um, yeah, that's exactly what I think."
Jabin stepped in front of him. "Would a crazy nut have done what I just did?"
"I don't even know what you just did!" Dustin snapped. "Just stay away from my wife, and don't come mear me again." Fiercely cutting around the man, he stomped off up the street.

    1. "Better stay away from my wife and my wife better away from you," Dustin was still ranting when he got to the bus stop. I swear, tonight we are going to have this out. I am too tired for this craziness. Fool holding my hand like a Zombie. No! This is going to end and end now. In good faith, he agreed to a year for her to complete her dissertation. A year was up, the dissertation done. He could cry from weariness. Cooking, cleaning, school meetings, work, as a married single parent had drained every last ounce of energy from his normally calm, loving self. Friends call him "Chill" because of his laid back nature and here he was going off on a obviously mentally ill guy. He didn't even recognize himself anymore. Tonight, for his own sanity, he was going to demand his wife become his wife again. He missed her. He missed his friend, his partner, and his lover. The agreement was she would look for a new position or return as Pastor of the 9th Street Church once school was over. This ministering to the food bank recipients was going to have to end too he guessed. How she could manage a whole congregation and yet not be able to lose these oddballs that followed her home was beyond him. He just knew he couldn't add security man to his already overloaded duties.

Security was a job for Jimmy. Jimmy was a former navy seal. He was skill in combat training. He also attend the 9th street church. 23. Once Dustin reached his own home again, he felt much more at ease. Leaving his boots at the door, he readied a bag of popcorn, sat down, and began searching Netflix for anything new. It was the beginning of the weekend, so he planned to enjoy it undisturbed.
That is, up until his phone rang. Heaving a sigh, Dustin answered without checking his caller ID. "Hello?"
    "Dustin. It's Michael."
Dustin sat up a bit straighter. "Um, hey. Uh, sorry, I've been a little busy lately, I just---"
"Don't tell me you were busy," snapped Michael. "I'd love to know how the cops got wind of our meeting, but that can wait. The point is, we never finished our deal and your package never got delivered."
"Um, about that; I think I'm gonna change my mind on that one. You hang onto it for me, can you?"
    "Dustin, I'm no moron---"
Click. The line went dead. Dustin frowned uneasily. "Hello? Michael, you there? Hey, hello?"
"Greetings, Dustin. How are you? It's a pleasure to meet you at last."
The voice sent shivers down his spine. Swallowing, Dustin tried to keep his voice from shaking. "Who are you?"
There was a sinister chuckle. "Oh, you don't know me yet, but you're going to. I have a feeling we'll get along splendidly. Just hold onto your hat, because you're in for a ride."

  24. Dustin sunk to the ground after he hung up the phone. He was sweating heavily. He could not get his mind off of what had just happened. He thought to himself:
“Why is this happening to me?”
He was deep in thought and caught himself as his stomach growled for food.
“I guess I should eat and forget what happened,” he remarked.
He could not forget. He kept coming back to his troubles. He grew paranoid in the night and listened attentively to anything. He tried to sleep, but without success. And so he tried to begin the next day as if all was normal.

    1. Tried was definitely the key word! He made coffee and tried to wake his body up since he had just a few winks of sleep after the disturbing phone call. Who was that guy that cut off Michael? "I don't remember meeting anyone two nights ago, what is he talking about?" Dustin thought. Maybe he was a friend of Michael's and he thought that it was someone else on the phone. Yeah, that had to be it, why else would that stranger think that they had met? Finishing the last of his coffee, Dustin felt better having that thought in mind.

  25. Until about ten in the morning, the routine succeeded well. Dustin's breakfast consisted of cold cereal, a powdered doughnut, and some cold steak fries from a takeout dinner three days ago, washed down with a glass of orange juice. He followed this up with a couple of his favorite shows, a message or two to some of his buddies, including apologies to Billy and Michael for the recent confusions, and a cigarette with the morning paper. By his second smoke, he was much more at ease.
He jumped nearly three feet in the air when the phone rang. Trying to block out what had happened yesterday, he picked it up, hands trembling. "Hello?"
    "Hey, Dad? It's me."
Cathy. Did she know he'd stopped by yesterday? "Hey, sweetie. What's happening? You doing okay?"
"I'm good. I had a game yesterday; sprained my ankle pretty bad. How are you?"
"I'm doing fine." A bit of an understatement, there; not that he was going to tell his daughter that a derranged lunatic broke into his house, and then he heard a scary voice on the phone. "How's Mom doing?"
"She's okay, although she was pretty up tight this morning; wouldn't tell me why."
Good, thought Dustin. "Oh, well, I hope she feels better soon. So, you need anything, or do you just want to talk?"
"Actually, I have a question. It's kinda weird, really; I don't know why I thought of it at all, but I was wondering if you knew..."
    "Oh? What is it?"
    There was a pause. Then,
    "Do you believe in aliens?"
    "Huh?"
"Aliens, or spirits; fairies, angels, or whatever. Any weirdo-creature things. Do you believe in them?"

    ReplyDelete
  26. "Hm, do I believe in aliens? No. Spirits, yes, but only good ones like Grandpa. Fairies are too girly for a grown man to believe in. Angels you know I believe in because you're my angel! Does that answer your question?

"Daddy, I'm serious. I had a dream someone was going to kill you. It was a man I couldn't see, only hear. He was so scarey!
    I woke up crying."

"Oh, baby girl, I'm fine. I'm sad that you are upset. Honey, remember daddy is just a dentist. Dentists don't usually have people trying to kill them. How about we go to lunch today? Would that help you feel better?"

His daughter reassured, Dustin hung up. He sat for a moment then wiped the sweat off his upper lip before he threw up his entire breakfast.

  27. Dustin sat there for a minute, stunned by his spontaneous vomit. Maybe it was the story his daughter had just told him. Maybe it was the thought of his dentistry degree. How is it possible that he can hold such a degree yet still manage to struggle financially? More importantly, why was his life becoming so peculiar? The angels, The voice. The voice. "What was that?" he thought as he remembered that all too real, deep, cringeworthy hellbent voice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. To distract himself from that menacing thought, Dustin began getting ready for his daddy-daughter-date, while pondering his life's goals. Dentistry was only one option; it wasn't his favorite thing in the world. He much preferred life as a father, anyhow.
"You certainly make a great one," said Jabin, revealing himself once again.
With snakelike reflexes, Dustin grabbed a lamp off an end table and swung hard. Jabin casually raised an arm, blocking and smashing the lamp as if it were paper. "Seriously, we must stop meeting this way."
"Then quit coming into my house!" cried Dustin, throwing the end table at Jabin, who brushed it aside just as casually as before. "What is wrong with you!? What do you want from me!?"
"I want you safe and alive," said Jabin urgently. "Listen, last night your daughter was given a vision that has to do with---"
"I DON'T CARE!" Dustin took one end of the couch and upended it at Jabin. "Leave my family alone, and get out!"
Jabin sighed; he'd been avoiding a direct confrontation, but the need had come. Raising a hand, he accumulated a ball of concentrated energy, then threw it at the couch. The couch burst into flame, then instantly disintegrated into ash.
Dustin stood dumbstruck as his living room was coated with fine, gray dust, and he presently found himself kneeling on the floor. "What... are you?"
"I am an angel," said Jabin patiently. "Specifically, your guardian, and I am trying to protect you from someone who wants to make an end of you and your house; er, family."
Had he not already expelled his breakfast, Dustin would have thrown up. "Who?"
Jabin's face went stone cold. "Have you ever heard of the name 'Chemosh'?"

    1. "No, I do not know anything of a Chemosh," whispered Dustin.
"Here, many of you attribute bad behavior to the devil, then you turn around and attribute evil to the same devil. Bad behavior is bad behavior. Chemosh, on the other hand, is one of the faces of real evil. His form of evil is to terrify, usually by stalking, until the stalked have no where else to hide.

  29. "Now, he can't really, 'officially' hurt you," said Jabin, kneeling down next to Dustin. "He can't physically do anything to you without specific permission from, ah, higher up." He glanced at the ceiling, hoping to clarify. This was lost on Dustin, however, so Jabin simply plowed on. "But that doesn't mean he's nothing to fear. The least he can do and has done is scared people into doing evil, evil things."
Dustin clenched his hands to stop them shaking. "Like what?"
"Well, if you've ever heard of ancient cultures like the Philistines, the Moabites, anything generally around the Mesopotamian area, they had several rather nasty rituals renown for glorification of Chemosh. If you want to know more, you can look it up on your own. But my point is, he can manipulate people into targeting you and your hou--- family. He sees tormenting you as kinda the way a mouse is toyed with by a cat."
"More like an orca," Dustin muttered. "Um, what did you mean when you said, 'special permission'?"
Jabin gave a pained smile. "Aha, we could get into all sorts of theoretical issues with this. Short version: there was one guy named Job who was allowed to be tormented physically; if you wanna know more, look it up. But I'm talking about YOU, right here, right now. Every human case is specifically different."
"So what are you gonna do about my family?" demanded Dustin, grown tired of hedgy small talk.
Jabin smiled broadly, his face turning stone cold. "This is where it gets more interesting." From some obscure location Dustin couldn't place, the angel pulled an amazing, vicious-looking dagger. Dustin could have sworn live, flickering flames ran along the edges.
"Fear not," said Jabin in a new, more intimidating voice. "He who Lives is on your side."

    ReplyDelete
  30. "What is that for?" Dustin asked Jabin. Jabin gave him a look as if asking if he was stupid.
"This is what will stop the Chemosh that is after you and your family."
Dustin just looked down at it. "How so? Just stab it into the Chemosh and it burst into flames like my couch, the end?"
"Sort of." Jabin stated. "This dagger is made of silver, and infused with an ever burning flame, harmless to us of course. But when a Chemosh touches the dagger their skin pretty much melts off."
Dustin flinches just at the though of how that feels. "Now given that the Chemosh is after you and your family you must kill it." Jabin said.
"Me! Your kidding right? I don't even know what the Chemoch looks like!" Dustin exclaimed.
Jabin stood up and went to the kitchen table on the other side of the room and sat down. "Well that makes to of us. The thing about Chemosh is they take human form so they can get close to you and gain your trust."
Dustin shot up off the floor. "What good are you! You tell me all of this crap, how somethings after my family, then tell me you don't even know what it looks like!"
Jabin just watches Dustin storm around the room. Hitting things and throwing a stack of old magazines on the coffee table to ground, he then plops down, putting his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands.
Jabin then speaks up "There are ways to tell if a human is a Chemosh."

  31. "Why do you keep calling it 'a' Chemosh?" asked Dustin, growing more confused by the minute. "I thought you said Chemosh is a demon-person, thing."
"He is," said Jabin. "Glad you're keeping up. What I mean is, there are ways to tell if another human, like yourself, is under his influence. There won't always be visible signs, so you have to look deeper."

    1. "If someone is cruel to animals, or their supposed loved ones, there is no question a Chemosh is involved. Do I need to even mention murder, rape, genocide as being signs of Chemosh? And unlike George W. Bush looking into Putin's eyes, a judgement cannot be determined by that means. Oh, and asking someone's mother will get you nowhere!" chuckled Jabin.
"That's not funny," cried Dustin. "None of this is funny! Just tell me how to save my family, and then, I never want to see you again!

      Delete
  32. "So pretty much anything evil means a Chemosh is involved?" Asked Dustin.
Jabin just shurged. "Almost everything, there are just pure evil people out in the world."
"So how do I tell the difference between pure evil and someone under control of a Chemosh?"
"Well" Jabin started "The most obvious sign is if a person was kind and caring, then started doing evil things and acting evil."
"Must be why my wife is being so evil" Dustin mumbled

    1. "Your wife is the woman you love," Jabin reminded Dustin. "Although you feel animosity toward her at this time, you should never mark those words upon your wife." Dustin felt bothered by Jabin's sudden sense of seriousness. "Well, I'm just saying, she has been evil." "Ah friend," Jabin continued, "we all have our days, our weeks, even our months where we may not be ourselves. This my friend, does not mean we are being controlled by a Chemosh, it means we are human. You wife is a human." "Well, it doesn't sound like she's too far off from this Chemosh business," Dustin replied with an attitude. Why was Jabin defending his wife anyway?

      Delete
  33. "Do not say that," Jabin said firmly. "Don't ever say that about anyone. It doesn't matter if it's true or not; just keep your head, heart and mouth clean."
Dustin blinked. "Why? What do you mean, 'if it's true or not'? Are you saying all people are evil?"
Jabin sighed, trying to avoid yet another awkward conversation. "Okay, um, we're kinda skimping on time, so I'll keep it short. Think of 'good' and 'bad' like genes. Everyone gets both; one 'good' gene, and one 'bad' gene, but the 'bad' gene is the dominant trait, so whenever the two natures clash on a neutral point, unless some outside guidance is given, the 'bad' one usually wins. Sometimes, the 'bad' gene wins anyway, if the person wants to do evil strongly enough. So technically, yes, human nature is evil, but no, that doesn't mean everyone will be evil."
Dustin blinked again, thoroughly confused. "What?"
At that moment, the phone rang. Both Dustin and Jabin, angel though he was, jumped. Instinctively, Dustin picked up without looking to see who it was. "Hello?"
"Hey, Dad. Me again." Cathy again; twice in one day. What was going on over there? "So, there's this guy that came over to our house, and he said he knows you. Do you know anyone named Michael?"
Crap. Dustin shut his eyes. "Yeah, he's a friend of mine. Do you know what he wants?"
"Uh, yeah; he's Mom's new boyfriend."

    1. "Mom's new boyfriend... what are you talking about Cathy?" Dustin replied. Deep down, Dustin knew he did not want to involve Cathy in his marital affairs, but at this point, he was too caught off guard to care. "How do you know that your mother is dating someone? Tell me!' Cathy's voice lowered, "I don't know what to say, I know a couple when I see one" she replied. Dustin sat in shock for what seemed like minutes, finally, he replied.

  34. OH, HELL NO! THAT'S NOT HAPPENING! We are not divorced yet and Michael is a worthless, lazy, bum. Tell your mother I need to hear from her in the next half' hour or I'm coming over. Kathy, after you give her that message why don't you go over to your sisters for the night, ok? Your mother and I need' to talk privately.

"Jabin, you are coming with me," Dustin told him as he grabbed his collar. "If you are my guardian angel you can just esp her guardian angel and tell him or her to meet us over there. She is still my wife and I'm sick of all this talk of evil crap. You got it? Michael is bad news. Call his angel, too! I'm done riding solo with you. This is now a small group encounter."

  35. Jabin put his hands firmly on Dustin's shoulders. "Whoa, slow down, cowboy. That's really not how it works. We're guardians, not magistrates."
Dustin threw up his hands. "Then what am I supposed to do!? I am not letting her near that scumbag; he'll sucker her out of her retirement fund or something!"
In his outburst, he had failed to recall that the phone was in his hand, still fully online. "Dad? Dad, are you there?" Cathy's voice called distantly. "Come on, Dad, what's going on? Is someone else there with you?"
Dustin brought the phone back down to his ear. "Uh, sorry, sweetie; just a lot going on right now."
"You're telling me. We never told you 'cause we knew you'd freak."
"Yeah, um, listen, you sit tight, and I'll be over in just a minute, okay?"
No answer. The other end was ominously silent. Dustin tried to ignore the sensation of the bottom dropping out of his stomach. "Hello? Cathy, you still there?"
"Oh, she's here, all right; she's just not speaking with you at the moment."
A chill ran down Dustin's spine, his hands gripping the receiver with white knuckles. "Who in hell are you?" he growled.
The same sinister chuckle from yesterday rang out. "Oh, believe me, hell is barely where this begins. I was actually looking forward to your visit; just so long as your companion keeps to himself." The word "companion" was spat with venom, loaded with hatred and fear. "So you just go ahead and drop by soon; I'll be keeping your daughter company. Charming girl, really she is. Until later, then." The line went dead.
The phone unconsciously slipped from Dustin's fingers. The only words he could manage to choke out were, "Why me?"
"Wish I could tell you," said Jabin, and startled him with a warm, reassuring embrace. "But that's not part of my jurisdiction."

  36. Dustin pushed Jabin away and charged for the door, just as he cracked the door open, it flew shut.
"Exactly what do you think you are doing?" Asked Jabin.
"What do you think! I'm going to save my wife and child from that monster!" Yelled Dustin.
"No, no, no! Hahaha, you need a plan of action. No plan and very bad things could happen."
"What? I die? It is worth it if my family would be safe." Dustin stated
"No, you think the Chemosh would let you off that easy? They are evil, they feed off your evil doings." Jabin replied "You need to know how to kill it so it will stay away and out of your life Dustin."
"Well my child and that thing are expecting me over soon, whats it going to do if I don't show? Because if it lays a finger on my child or wife then I will blame you" Dustin glared at Jabin

  37. Once again, Jabin placed his hands firmly on Dustin's shoulders. "Nothing is going to happen to them, provided they don't let Chemosh provoke them. Chemosh is just one demon; a very powerful one, but just one, all the same. He cannot do anything he isn't allowed to do; his name, 'Chemosh,' is basically a stamp on everything he does. He cannot hurt them."
"Then what's he want me for!?" cried Dustin.
"Again, I wish I could tell you, but I can't," said Jabin gently. "Just know that, whatever you do from here, I am not letting you out of my sight for a minute. Part of this is between you and Chemosh, but another part is between him and me. Remember, he's one guy, and he cannot touch them or you without explicit permission."
Dustin took a few deep breaths, waiting for his heart rate to slow. Once his hands stopped shaking, he picked up the phone. "I'm calling Billy."

  38. 'What for?" Asked Jabin.
"He's going to help me with situation, seeing as I don't know what the hell to do. My wife can not date Michael, I've told the woman about him when we were together, how all he does is use women for money. So I'm calling Billy and we are going to pay a visit to Michael, seeing as I can not go crap about the damn Chemosh that is currently terrorizing my family."
Jabin took the phone from Dustin and set it down. "Listen, I know your upset and you want to go take your anger out on Michael, but that wont help. As for the Chemosh situation, that's what I'm here for. You want to take care of it now by letting me train you on how to get rid of him? Or call Billy and cause chaos?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dustin did't know how to reply. As much as he wanted to call Billy, whether it caused chaos or not, he was intrigued by Jabin's offer. "What do you mean train me on how to get rid of him?" he asked. "You heard me, come with me" replied Jabin. Dustin followed slowly behind Jabin, asking himself relentlessly how he ended up in this situation. "Come on!" Jabin called back to Dustin who had fallen behind.

  40. As Jabin led Dustin down the dirt road, he didn't understand what step was next. He watched Jabin move confidently in his stride, as he asked himself if he could possibly take this on. He looked up to the clouds asking God over and over, "why me? why my family?" He waited for an answer as he trudged behind Jabin, but there was no reply from God. As he watched the clouds, he noticed them turning more gray. A storm was coming, and it was approaching rapidly.

  41. The storm grew more fierce and raging as Jabin and Dustin moved down the dirt road. Jabin breath was beginning to become more rapid by the second. "What was going happen" he kept on thinking over and over in his head. As the dirt road ended they set off to the woods, Jabin and Dustin ended up near a lake now Jabin was worried as he walked up to it. Dustin said "why so tense I'm only going to teach you how to fight". Jabin face went to a sigh of relief.

Jabin knew he was not a good fighter so he toughed it out and tried to fight, it was either this or get killed trying nothing at all. Jabin made a left hit to Dustin jaw "nice one kid but remember to always keep your eyes on the person you are fighting". As the hours passed and both men were getting tired they decided to quit and walk back through the woods to the dirt road. As they walk back they heard a load bang and both turned around.

  42. They turn around to see a car driving their way, both men jump to the side of the road away from the car. All they could see was head lights speeding past them. Both men at the same time said "wait was that all about". From Jabin look on his face he knew it could only mean one thing trouble was coming. Dustin decided that fighting was the least of their problems this calls for more drastic measures. They had to find out who tried to run them over first of course but then they needed to strike first before they were killed or hurt. They certainty didn't want any of their family to be in harms way of whoever tried to run them down and also who knew we would be out that night?.

  43. They both wondered if it could have been Michael behind the wheel trying to get rid of them both. Dustin decided to do a little snooping of his own he wanted to get some information and fast. Jabin decided to go along to make sure someone had his back even if that someone was him. They went and jumped into Dustin car which was parked a little down the road and sped off into the night. They both had no idea what to look for but they started in the obvious place Michael place. They decided to take the long way so no one would be curious to why they just rolled up in front of the house.

  44. As they entered through the back of the house both men jumped out checking to make sure no one was around. Both walked up to the first window to peer in to see if anyone was there inside. When they both noticed that it was clear, Dustin picked the lock and they walked right in. They searched the house and then decided to check the computer that was left on. Both starred at the screen and saw that there was a picture of Dustin wife and Michael in it only it was dated for the day before. They were kissing and Dustin went into a fit of fury.

  45. Dustin trashed the whole house Jabin tried to stop him but Jabin was hit in the face by Dustin rant. Soon Jabin finally calmed him down and they left the house. Jabin was trying to convince him to just calm down and think before he did anything stupid. Dustin gave Jabin a mad looking face and Jabin knew no to say another word. Soon they were at Jabin place to relax or in Jabin mind wait for Dustin the fury to calm down before Jabin decided to take Dustin home to confront his wife about the matter.

  46. Dustin calmed down and they both climbed into the car, Dustin stated it and they both say there trying to warm up.
"Maybe we should go to your apartment, it's late" Jabin pointed out. Dustin looked at the cars clock it said it was 10:47pm. He cried out in anger and hit the broken car horn repeatedly.
"Yeah I guess" Dustin said quietly
Dustin parked the car in the parking lot and got out and slammed the car door. Then stalked into the building. Jabin could tell he was ticked off that Michael wasn't at his house when they stopped by his house, Dustin really wants to hurt Michael, but Jabin can't let that happen.

  47. To Dustin's surprise, once back in his own living room, everything had been set in order. Even the couch was back in its place, whole and un-incinerated. "What the...?"
Jabin gave him a sheepish grin. "Yeah, I fixed your things. Your welcome."
Dustin looked at the angel long and hard. He still wasn't sure if he believed in angels or spirits or whatever, but whatever Jabin was, he was certainly unique. So he said nothing and just plunked down on the couch. Jabin sat down next to him.
"Okay, so today we made a little progress," said Jabin as Dustin casually turned on the TV. "You know some specifics, you, ah, completely trashed that guy's house, and you learned a couple of moves. So, how do you feel about all this?"
"'How do I feel'?" Dustin stared at him incredulously. "Um, let's see; a little ticked off at Michael and my wife, completely terrified for my daughter; oh, and did I mention a little paranoid? I have learned essentially nothing since we started this."
"Sure you have," said Jabin in surprise. "You now know a little more about what you're dealing with, you know a couple of fighting maneuvers in case this gets physical---"
"A couple!?" cried Dustin. "Then what the heck were we doing all day? What am I supposed to be gaining from this?"
"Being prepared," replied Jabin matter-of-factly. "Whatever Chemosh throws at you, as long as you can ready your mind, he can't win this."
Dustin gave the angel a glare. "So it's all in my head, is it? It's just one, big, psychic battle now."
"Partially," Jabin conceded. "Half the battle is in your heart; sometimes things get physical, is all. But don't sweat it, okay?"
Heaving a sigh, Dustin turned his attention back to surfing Netflix. "Well, then, tell me: now what?"

    ReplyDelete
  48. "Now we relax for the night" Jabin told him "Just get some rest and we can make a battle plan tomorrow when you wake"
    "Okay..uh you are sleeping?"
Jabin smiled a bit. "I'm an angle I don't need sleep. I'll watch over you."
"Hell no! Do you know how creepy that is?!" Dustin exlamed. "That's creepy as hell! You stay out here and watch tv, do some angle crap. DO NOT step foot in my room while I am sleeping! Got it?" He said
"Yes Dustin I get it, but just so you know, before we met I did pop in from time to time while you slept." Jabin chuckled.
Dustin shoved the remote to the tv and Netflix at him and walked into his room, while mumbling that Jabin was a creep.
"Hey how do I work this stuff?" Jabin called to him.
"You are an angle figure it out Mr. Know it all" Dustin replied back as he shut his bedroom door.

  49. As Jabin figures out how to work Netflix and the television, Dustin drifts off into a deep sleep. Keeping in mind what Dustin mentioned about Jabin not coming into his room while asleep, Jabin feels that he should because he knows that Dustin has been in some troublesome circumstances lately, and is concerned for his well-being. Going against his word, Jabin enters into Dustin's bedroom, finding him in deep sleep. Being an angel, Jabin has the ability to see the dreams of those who he's guarding. Jabin looks into Dustin's dream and sees that Dustin is in his own dream, running, and trying to escape something. what could it be? He looks back. Dustin is running from himself.

The news had been calling him some kind of hero, but when he looked in the mirror he saw nothing but disgust. Knowing what he had done he ran away and left the town. The town's crime rate increased because there were no one around anymore to help fight the crime.

Once Dustin can only see darkness, they are trust through the open window and out into the night air. Dustin is holding his lids together tightly, afraid of what he may see. "It's alright, you can open your eyes." Jabin says. Dustin barely peeps his eyes open, but enough to see that they are soaring through the air heading right for the city. "I have been growing concerned with the dreams you are having. I can see them you know, your dreams.." says Jabin. "I want to take you into the city so you can learn the truth." "The truth about what??!" says Dustin.

  53. Dustin stood there on the roof of that office-building getting beat by torrents of rain. His mind raced, "None of this can be real... Can it? I know who my father is." He tried to justify what he had just seen and heard but there was no satisfactory explanation. "Time is running out, I need answers... Who is this Charles Thorn and what does he want from me?" Only one person could give him the answers he desperately needed but that person had just literally disappeared. "This is crazy... But he said I could do it too. He said it's in our genes... To hell with it!" Dustin balled his his fists and took off toward the edge of the rooftop at a mighty gallop; almost loosing his footing on the slick service. As he neared the edge Dustin began to regret his decision, too late. He barreled off the roof and began his thirty story descent to the street below. "Damn it, damn it, damn it!" He screamed, holding his forearms up in a defensive posture, concentrating with every available neuron on Jabin. Seconds before he collided with the pavement his body began to glow and pulsate violently. Instead of a grisly splat onlookers saw Dustin's physical form disintegrate into a staticky cloud of electrical discharge and he was gone.

  54. With his eyes still clenched shut, Dustin could feel the wind rushing against his face and when he finally opened his eyes the city lay beneath him glowing. "I did it, I'm alive!" he gasped with relief. As Dustin hovered in the air watching the life beneath him at work, he felt at peace for the first time since his whole world started to turn upside down. He wanted to fly straight to his wife to share the incredible news of everything he had just discovered but quickly reminded himself of the pain and anguish she had recently caused him, he really was alone. Feeling defeated once again, Dustin returned down to the city to take a walk and clear his head. Feeling rather exhausted, he contemplated heading home but ended up at a nearby bar instead.

  55. "Shot of tequila, no lime and keep 'em coming please," he asked the bartender. Dustin didn't even bother looking up until she slammed the shot glass and a bottle of tequila down in front of him. "Rough night? Good. It's about time you had the short end of the stick," she exclaimed with sass. Dustin abruptly lifted his head to make eye contact and choked on his own saliva when he realized it was his previous fiance, Sarah. Before he could catch his breath and think of something to say she had already disappeared to the other end of the bar. If he wasn't in trouble before, he really was now. Dustin couldn't decide whether or not to leave but his unmoving body made the decision for him. Just when he thought things couldn't get any worse, he watched Michael walk through the bar entrance.

  56. "This night has just gone from bad to worse." Dustin thought dejectedly. From his position at the bar he could see Michael peering over the heads of the crowd, looking for someone. Eventually Dustin caught his eye and Michael began forcing his way through the swell of people making a determined beeline for Dustin. "I'm outta here." With that Dustin disappeared into the restroom and locked himself up in the far stall. The restroom door swung open hard and Dustin could hear the sound of ornate spurs chiming in time to footsteps. "Only one man I know wears those." Dustin knew what he had to do. He pressed his body flat up against the filthy brick wall beside the toilet and began to concentrate. He focused his mind totally on the parking-lot outside of the bar. Veins began to appear above his temples as sweat beaded down; the chimes were getting closer. The air around him was getting staticky and hot. The wall and Dustin's body began to vibrate rapidly out of phase with everything else around them. As Michael kicked open the stall door he was temporarily blinded by a white burst of light. This was followed by a loud crack, then a pop and Dustin was gone. Leaving only the charred outline of his body on the wall to indicate that he was ever there... As he strode confidently across the parking-lot Dustin laughed to himself, "I'm gonna enjoy these new-found talents of mine."

He struggled and hit his head against the table with a metal clank, indicating he had something on his head. It got the attention of two men in all white, who speaking of his dream and a man named Charles Thorn. They rushed over. One looked just like Jabin and had a name tag indicating it. The other looked strangely familiar, but he couldn't recall from where. The stranger adjusted one of the IVs and Jabin typed in a few things on two of the machines and everything went dark.

There appeared to be enough of a ledge to walk down and reach the bottom of the cliff. Down there was a boat at a dock with no one in sight.

The key were in the ignition, the tank filled with gas, and everything else looked ready to go, which he knew living on the coast of Maryland. Something was very wrong however. A sudden flash of a memory came over him of two men in white, but it quickly subsided and he suddenly felt much calmer. Something about the island in the distance called to him. That would be as good a place as any, he thought, so he drove there.

  62. Dustin traveled there. It was much further than it seemed and it quickly became dark and story, further hindering him. It calmed, though it was still quite dark as he reached the island. he could hear thunder in the far distance, which would occasionally break the utter silence as he traveled the island. There was an uphill path he was following. He didn't feel compelled to this time however, it was just a place to start and possibly get a view of the whole island once he reached the top of the very high hill. Once he did, he saw something that made him really begin to wonder what was going on and where he could possibly be.

  63. It was Cathy and Lauren. He found them and started to travel the unfamiliar terrain to reach them. This island was different. Nothing laid in ruin, every building stood tall and proud. As he got closer to what seemed like a small city, he noticed people all over.

It wasn't a stranger, but his own reflection. He had wings? Now he knew he had to be dreaming. But why then did the pain seem so real? He flexed his shoulders and beautiful golden-like feathers spread out behind him.

The bright glow of the sun was bouncing off every window and making it hard for his eyes to adjust to any one thing in the quiet, still room. He listened attentively, still hoping to hear the voices of Cathy and Lauren. He heard a loud clatter that distracted him from his thoughts.

  71. Dustin looked up hopefully and stared right into the face of Jabin. His shoulders drooped in defeat and he suddenly remembered the wings weighing his shoulders down. He looked up questioningly at Jabin. "Its your time" replied Jabin. He softly directed him back towards the pillars and Dustin followed without so much as a question. He took one last glance at his reflection before exiting.

  72. Back outdoors Dustin and Jabin stood amongst the pillars that seemed larger than life. Finally, dustin broke the awkward silence asking "Why"? "Why did Cathy and Lauren ignore me?" "They couldn't hear you", replied Dustin. Dustin looked confused but didn't say anything more.

Dustin's eyes start shifting back and forth to Jabin and Cathy not knowing what Jabin is talking about.

With great despair, Dustin lets go of the hope in chasing after Cathy. Dustin stands beside Jabin and asks with grave melancholy, "where exactly are we going, Jabin?" Without a word Jabin begins guiding Dustin away from Cathy further into the sky. Jabin remained quiet and a million thoughts passed through Dustin's mind. He had flown in airplanes many times before, but never had his eyes laid sight on such a beautiful place. "Dustin, wait just a second so that I can explain some of the regulations of your new home. You mustn't anger the ruler of this world. You must treat the other souls with respect. Last but certainly the most important, do not lie to any soul, no matter what their rank may be in this world. Did you get everything?" He is extremely curious as to the significants of the red crystal, he is laying next to. It seems to have some mystical healing powers that are curing him by the second. He may never find out, but is greatlful that it seems to be healing him.

  115. As Dustin laid in a panic, he was ready to hear the news. Dustin could feel his heart pounding inside of his chest. Dustin was beyond puzzled as he tried to piece together what happened. Jabin looked Dustin straight in the eyes and took a deep breath. "C'mon spit it out already," exclaimed Dustin.

    1. "Lets just get this done and over with. Just spit it out, peel off the bandaid. I can handle it, (I think.") Jabin decided to take a couple minutes and evaluate the information he was just about to release to Dustin. (Muttering to himself) "is there anything I should leave out or should I just give it all to him all at once? I surely hope he can handle the truth." Well I guess we will see if he is ready or not. Once it comes out, it cannot be taken back.

  116. "Okay fine, I don't know if you're ready for this Dustin," said Jabin. "Trust me after what I just went through recently, I can handle anything now," said Dustin. Dustin gulped as he prepared himself for the news. "You obviously are learning that you're far from normal..." said Jabin. Jabin looked around as he tried to stall telling Dustin the truth.

    1. But he realized that this is the moment that everything has to come out. If there is any time that Dustin can handle it, it will be this moment. Just hope that there isn't a long term effect on his mental stability. "Well here it comes Dustin. So, brace yourself for things that may be hard to handle and even harder to believe. If youre not ready for it, now is the one and only time you can say so. Otherwise here it comes." There was a cool, calm in the air as Dustin braces himself for some of the most shocking information he has ever experienced. You could hear a pin drop at that moment. Both of them taking big deep breaths and gulps that could be heard for a football fields length.

  117. Jabin began a story that seemed absurd. He and Sidney were the only children of a king from a far off land. The king feared that a revolution was going to happen so he sent the children away. His instinct was correct as a few days later a coup rose up in the capital of Loudan. Sidney was sent away with the queen's first maiden, Sylvia, while Dustin was entrusted to the king's distant cousin, Charles.

  118. Sylvia took Sidney away to the country of Singral. There she made a name as an exceptional house keeper and worked her way from cleaning small homes to cleaning for the lords of the land. Sylvia was ashamed of her “mother” and went into the nursing field. When Sylvia became ill, Sidney realized they could not be related as she reviewed the medical charts. With a fear of dying, Sylvia revealed to Sidney the truth of her history.

  119. Charles, always jealous of his cousin the king, resented having to leave his home. Alas, he left due to the large fortune given to him to care for Dustin. Charles knew he didn’t have to go far. The familial relationship between he and the king was so distant, and the odds of being recognized were slim. Charles made Dustin his servant when they reached nearby Tibadio, eventually selling him to travelling gypsies.

  120. Dustin remembered the gypsies, who raised him as one of their own. “Okay, Jabin, I know the rest of my story. Get back to Syliva,” Dustin demanded. “I’m not sure what to tell you,” Jabin says. “That’s all I have been told about her.”

    ReplyDelete
  121. “What happened to our parents,” Dustin queries. Jabin hangs his head with a sigh. “Again, I do not know more than this,” Jabin begins. “When the coup breached the city, they found the Palace empty. Royalty and servants alike were gone.”

    ReplyDelete
  122. “They disappeared?” Dusting said in disbelief. “How many? And how?” Jabin replied, “If only I knew. But it is my duty to watch over you until they are found. And when that happens, you will be reunited.” With that, silenced enveloped them as Dustin contemplated what he had learned, and he drifted to sleep.

  123. Jabin watched as Dustin feel asleep. He felt bad for Dustin, all that he has endured. Dustin had no idea where his family disappeared to and where his sister Sidney was. Jabin was sent to protect Dustin and he was going to fulfill his duty to the fullest. If that meant to protect Dustin mentally and physically from harm, he would do that. At that moment, Jabin knew what he had to do to protect Dustin from himself.

  124. Jabin was going to help Dustin find his family. He knew that if he helped find his family, this would protect him from himself mentally. Jabin could tell that the unknown whereabouts of his family was taking a toll on him. Dustin was becoming depressed and losing weight. Jabin knew he would have to get Dustin healthy before they encounter any such travels. As Jabin went to bed for the night he became very happy knowing that he was going to change Dustins life for the better in the morning.

  125. That morning Jabin was waiting patiently for Dustin to awake. Not soon later, Dustin stirred and Jabin knew it was time to let him know his plans. Half asleep still, Jabin excitedly said, "Let's go find your family!" Dustin rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and in confusion asked, "And how do you plan on us doing this?" Jabin confidently responded, "First, lets go find news on Sylvia. Then she can help us find Sidney."

  126. Jabin made sure Dustin was well fed and nourished before they endured the travel. The first stop on the long journey to find Dustin's sister, Sidney, was the country of Singral. It took Jabin & Dustin eight days to get to Singral. They knew she lived in a small village in the country side. As they approached the village, it was evident of the depression. Ran down hutches and poor living conditions. Everyone seemed to know everyone. And they were quickly guided to Sylvia's hutch.

  127. As they approached the hutch they entered and found Sylvia on her death bed. She was very sick and not much time left. Jabin & Dustin stated who they were and told them about their journey to find Sidney. Sylvia was very soft spoken due to her weakness. She explained how Sidney wanted to pursue a nursing degree due to Sylvia unable to pursue her life time goal as a nurse. Sylvia told them where she got a nursing job at a hospital in a surrounding large city. She explained she got very sick very quickly and Sidney knew she had to act quickly to provide for herself and the medical care Sylvia needed. Sylvia told Jabin & Dustin where they could find Sidney.

  128. Later that day, Jabin & Dustin, were able to connect with Sidney. She looked wonderful and healthy for all she had endured as well. Dustin & Sidney caught up on lost time together. The two of them, including Jabin, made a plan to find out where their parents disappeared to. And whatever news they found out, they would continue to be there for each other. Jabin knew at that point, he did his job by protecting the both of them. He made a promise to himself, that he would be there for Dustin & Sidney as they started their long journey to finding their parents.

Dustin and Sidney returned to Sylvia to see if she had any more information about their parents or where they came from. She was so frail and was having a hard time remembering. She explained that due to the revolution they had to be sent away to be kept safe. No one knew if their parents had survived. Sylvia told them how to get back to the kingdom, but warned them about what they may have to go through to get there.

They packed what few belongings they had and enough food to hopefully get them by. They began their journey together not knowing what to expect. They got on their horses and headed into the dreary forest. It was raining and gloomy which made for rough travels on their first day. After what seemed like hours they stopped for lunch. While they were eating they heard the strangest sound.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Jabin finally just told Dustin the truth,"You and your family were killed in a car wreck." The news dropped Dustin to his knees and all of his senses went numb. All he could see was a bright white light and it was as if he went completely deaf. He could faintly make out Jabin's silhouette, but for some reason his face was clear. Dustin sat there looking at Jabin's mouth moving, but could not make out a single word.

    ReplyDelete
  132. This loss of senses lasted, what felt like an eternity to Dustin, for what realistically was only a couple minutes. As he came out of the fog, Dustin could start to make out what Jabin was saying. Jabin sat down next to Dustin and began to explain everything to him. Dustin had been in a tragic accident that claimed every member of his family.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Dustin asked,"Why am I here and nobody else is"? Jabin explained to him that the higher up powers had decided his destiny was too important for mankind to allow it to end so early. A sense of guilt came over Dustin, feeling that it was unfair that he was the only one that came back. What made it worse is that he had no idea what was so important about his future that allowed him to come back. He had dreams of becoming a Doctor, but up until the accident it was simply a dream he kept to himself.

  134. Jabin said,"I do not know what they saw in you, but it must have been important for them to give you wings". Wings were not only a means for travel, but also symbolized his new life's meaning as a healer. Jabin explained to Dustin that the wings meant he had the ability to bring good people back from the brink of death. His wings would take him to tragedies, where his job would be to decide which victim was deserving of his touch. His gift would not only allow him to save lives, but it would also be a difficult curse in choosing who to save.

    ReplyDelete
  135. With that thought Dustin's wings extended and began to flap on their own. He slowly lifted off of the ground and started to take off across the sky. In his mind all Dustin could think is if I have the power to fly and save lives, there must be a way that I can go back in time and save my family. The entire thought of flying and saving lives seemed so absurd, but how could Dustin deny what was actually happening. As he made his way north, he noticed that Jabin was flying along side of him.

    ReplyDelete
  136. In the distance Dustin could make out a faint light that continued to grow bigger and brighter with time. He yelled over to Jabin,"Do you see the light?" It seemed crazy to even ask with the light right in front of his face, but with everything else that had happened it was hard to know what to believe. Jabin said,"Yes I see it, do you see the source yet"? As the light grew larger and brighter, a burning fire came into focus for both of them.

  137. As they approached the flame, they realized it was a candlelight vigil for a young girl who had suddenly grown ill for no apparent reason. As they approached Dustin was drawn to the girl's hospital room, as she lay unconscious her spirit told Dustin and Jabin a story. She explained that her spirit had been triggered to call out to him for healing when the time had come when he learned the truth of his past. She told him "I have been traveling for a long time waiting to give you the hints you need to bring your family back together". Your family has been separated but you will bring them back together and then you will all rule as the greatest most noble family in history, this Dustin is your purpose".

    ReplyDelete
  138. Dustin could hardly believe any of this was real. He begged of Jabin to pinch him, punch, or do whatever he could to wake Dustin up. The girl grabbed a hold of Dustin, but Dustin pushed with all his might to leave her grasp; threw the girl away from him and flew out the window weeping. The girl looked at Jabin in terror "You must find him, before the other do." Jabin looked at the girl with confusing tone "The others?" he questioned. "The people who are after Dustin and his family. The ones who long to rule over them and destroy every noble family history out there."
